Pat B-WLast year I went to Haliburton to study cheesecloth imagery with Mary Pal. I was fortunate to receive a scholarship from the Ontario Handweavers and Spinners. This was what came out of this amazing course. I did the designing just before Christmas then started.
This piece called “Greenman” is 2/20’s hand dyed silk and the weft is a singles wild tussah silk also handdyed. The weave is a 16 shaft twill pattern. Once the fabric was woven I started on the cheesecloth design of the face and some of the leaves. All the cheese cloth and silk leaves are hand dyed as well as the lining. Some of the dark leaves in the background are screen printed using Profab textile paint. Applying the cheese cloth design is very time consuming as it is machine stitched using invisible thread. The silk leaves were applied using MistyFuse then machine embroidered. The lining is low water immersion dyed then screen printed with the same leaf pattern as the body of the kimono.
